The Rise of the Home Office

A year ago today, in light of the growing pandemic, we made the difficult decision to close the workroom. What we thought was a 2 week pause turned out to extend into a much longer period of uncertainty. The team rallied to make lemonade out of lemons (as they say), pivoting our resources to help those in need by creating masks for so many frontline workers. We were reminded of the importance of our amazing team and our design community.

When we finally felt comfortable enough (and were given the green light by Governor Baker) to reopen in May we were still unprepared for what the months ahead would bring.

We’ve learned so much since March 16, 2020, both professionally and personally and have come to understand so many new ways of doing things, living and ultimately designing as a result of this adaption to the new norm.  Of all the new designs trends we’ve seen come out of the pandemic, there’s one that is uniquely COVID-19 — and that’s the home office.

According to a recent Gallup Panel, 56% of workers across the country are currently working remotely either full or part of the time and 23% of these workers say they would stay working from home permanently.

That fact, coupled with the consequential rise of Zoom and video calls, means that not only do home office spaces need to be functional and flexible but they also need the right design.

With design in mind, here are 5 amazing home offices we collaborated on with some of our design partners:

#1: Simplicity at its finest. A bright and open office space designed by Kelly McGuill Home.

#2: A multi-purpose space with a view designed by Meredith Rodday Design.

#3: Cheerful and focused. A designated office space designed by and for Meg McSherry Interiors.

#4: A custom roman shade adds  a lift of color to this home office. Design by Grayscale Design.

#5: Last one! Custom woven shades add warmth to a cozy and welcoming home office. Design by Katie Rosenfeld & Company.

Next month we’ll be sharing our thoughts on popular window treatments in some of the residential and commercial projects we're working on.

One last thing! We’re excited to announce two new members to the Makkas Drapery team. Please join us in welcoming Vikki (Manny's cousin), our new Project Manager working alongside Olivia, and Karleigh, who started this week as our new Office Assistant. Karleigh will be the voice on the other side of the phone when you call.

Happy designing!
